This was REM’s debut single back in 1981 taking its title
from the US funded station that broadcast to Eastern Europe, the Middle East
and Russia. Radio Free Europe’s anti-communist
agenda developed from the work of the National Committee for a Free Europe but
you’d pick up little in the way of clues from Stipe’s undecipherable rendition
of the lyrics:
Keep me out of country in the word
Deal the porch is leading us absurd
Push that, push that, push that to the hull
That this isn't nothing at all
Straight off the boat, where to go?
Calling all
in transit, calling all in transit
Radio Free Europe, radio...
Radio Free Europe, radio...
This video comes from a performance of the David Letterman
show.
One of my fave REM songs ;-)
