The Dream

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal”.

The words of Martin Luther King still resonate five decades later. That famous speech made in Washington on 28 August 1963 is remembered in I Have a Dream on BBC Radio 4 today.
On the 20th anniversary of his death in 1988 Radio 1 presented “an imaginative collage” with his words translated into lyrics and sung David Daniel and members of the London Community Gospel Choir. Archive recordings were “set to a rap-style rhythm”.

“I want people to be mind-blown about how great King was as a speaker and pacifist”, producer Michael Wakelin told the Radio Times. “This is not a documentary or history of his life. It’s a tribute. It’s about the way that we’ve been inspired by him”.
The music for The Dream was composed by Richard Attree of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This is part of that programme broadcast on Easter Sunday 3 April 1988.

You can read King's speech in full here.

Hi there. I am so grateful you wrote this post. I remember The Dream being broadcast and I was amazed and moved by it. Do you have the full recording. I taped it but alas it is lost. Is there anywhere I can get this from.

Jacky-sadly this is all I have of the recording and I don't think it was ever commercially released. Sorry.

I have the original recording I taped on a cassette in 1988 which I am playing again. Richard Attree has knocked the music bizz on the head and lives in Spain. Dave Daniel is a pastor in Tottenham and is thrilled I have just sent him the recording as a cd. He has a beautiful voice. It should be released by Sony.

Hi Veryan,

I had a recording of this when it was aired and loved it. So emotive. I too have lost a copy of this and can no longer find anyway of obtaining it. Is it possible in any way to get a copy please?

My family also remember this fondly from 1988. We'd love a copy of the whole thing if anyone has one. Thanks! Tom (bakert@gmail.com)
